Description

The Owner's Insights on the Destin Motorized Awning

The Destin is the Maui with a hat on. Same frame, same acrylic, same pre-installed motor and paired remote, plus a powder-coated aluminum hood that covers the top and sides of the rolled-up fabric. If your property sits under oaks, near the coast, or anywhere the weather changes its mind twice a day, the hood is the few hundred dollars that keeps the fabric looking new in year four instead of year two.

It arrives in one long box, fully assembled, and two people lift it into the brackets. The hood makes it a touch taller on the wall, about 10.4 in when retracted, so check the clearance under your gutter before you fall in love with a width.

Where I'd steer you elsewhere: if the awning will be in a sheltered spot under a deep eave, the hood is doing a job the house already does, and the Maui saves you money. And if you want the front bar sealed too, that's the Key West, not this.

What Customers Say About the Destin Awning

Destin owners reviewing at the big retailers lean on the same points: the hood and clean white frame look finished on the house, the motor gets used every day where a crank would not, and the acrylic colors read true outdoors. Installation reviews are mostly matter-of-fact, with the recurring advice to have a second set of hands and find the studs first.

The complaints are the ones you'd want to know. Freight damage shows up often enough that you should inspect the box at the curb. One owner of a 16 ft Destin reported a defective arm replaced free, followed by a remote that would not stay paired and slow callbacks from Awntech. And several owners across Awntech's models have watched the arms flex in gusts under the 30 mph rating. Retract it when the wind gets interesting.

Why You'll Love the Destin Motorized Retractable Awning

  • A hood over the fabric. The aluminum hood covers the top and sides of the roll, so leaves, sap and rain stay off the fabric when it's put away.
  • Shade from the remote. Motor pre-installed on your chosen side, remote already paired, manual override if the power's out.
  • Acrylic that keeps its color. 100 percent solution-dyed acrylic outlasts polyester by years, and the cover is replaceable when you want a fresh look.
  • Arrives built. Fully assembled from Texas. Awntech puts installation at 1 to 2 hours with two people.
  • Pitch you can set. Tilt from 0 to 15 degrees to chase a low sun across the evening.

Not sure if you need the hood, or which side the motor goes on? Call or text us at 1 800 914 0074 or 352 274 6387, or email sales@optimaloutdooroasis.com. Texting is fine. We'll measure it with you before you order.

Why You Should Consider an Awntech Retractable Awning

Awntech is a family-run manufacturer in Euless, Texas, building awnings since 2003. They were the first to standardize retractable awning sizes and ship them fully assembled, which is the only reason you can buy a 20 ft awning online and hang it on a Saturday. Every awning uses 100 percent solution-dyed acrylic, never polyester. The frame and fabric carry a 5-year limited warranty; the motor carries 1 year.

Do You Need a Hood on a Retractable Awning?

The fabric on any retractable awning spends most of its life rolled up. On an open-roll awning that roll sits bare on the wall, collecting whatever falls on it. The Destin's hood shields the top and both sides, which matters under trees, near salt air, and in climates where it rains on a rolled-up awning for weeks at a time. It does not seal the front bar; the fabric's leading edge is still visible. If you want the whole roll closed in a box, that's the Key West full cassette.

Which Size Retractable Awning Do You Need?

Measure the wall, not the patio. You need a clear band of wall at least 96 in off the ground and as wide as the awning, with nothing in the drop zone: no lights, no gutters, no upstairs windows. The 12 ft by 10 ft covers a six-seat table with room to walk around it. Go to 14 or 16 ft if the seating runs along the house, and remember the projection tops out at 10 ft on every width from 12 ft up. Awntech's measuring guide below walks through it with pictures.

Left Motor or Right Motor?

Stand in the yard facing the wall. Whichever side the outdoor outlet is on, that's your motor side. The cord is 12 ft and plugs into a standard 110V outlet, so you only need an electrician if there's no outlet within reach. The manual override and 5 ft rocker arm are there for the day the power is out and the clouds roll in.

How Much Does a Retractable Awning With a Hood Cost?

The Destin runs from about $1,478 for the 8 ft to about $4,118 for the 24 ft. The 12 ft by 10 ft is $1,945.12 with delivery included, which is $200 more than the same size Maui without the hood, and the same price Awntech charges on its own site. Find it lower and we'll beat it.

Wind, Rain and When to Bring It In

Awntech tests the arms to 30 mph, and its warranty does not cover wind damage or an awning left out in a storm. Treat it as shade, not shelter. Retract it in gusty weather, before you leave the property between guests, and never let rain pool on the fabric. Awntech sells a wireless wind sensor that retracts the awning on its own; for a rental where nobody is home to press the button, ask us about it.

Installation: What Arrives and What You Need

One long box, fully assembled: the awning and hood on its roller, the motor and remote, wall brackets, the limit adjustment tool, the rocker arm, the valance and a touch-up paint kit. You supply the lag bolts or anchors for your wall type, a drill, a level, a stud finder and a second person. Mount into studs, headers or masonry, never siding alone. Set the pitch, program the motor stops, and you're done. If you'd rather not, our installer matching service can find a local pro.

Delivery and Lead Time

Every Destin is made to order in Texas. Awntech builds it in about 5 business days, and then it travels. The 8 ft ships by parcel to your door. Everything 10 ft and wider ships LTL freight (a semi truck, curbside delivery), the carrier calls to set an appointment, and someone has to be there to sign. Plan on roughly three weeks from order to curb. That's an average, not a promise, so call or text us for today's real number. Delivery is included in the price for the lower 48 states.

Warranty, Returns and the Fine Print

The frame and fabric carry a 5-year limited warranty: full replacement of a defective part in year one, prorated after that. The motor, remote and electronics carry 1 year. The lateral arms are not covered, and neither is weather damage. Returns are accepted within 30 days only for a defect on arrival. If you change your mind or measured wrong, Awntech issues merchandise credit less a 25 percent restocking fee, and you pay the return freight. Cancellations are free for 24 hours, then 10 percent. Measure twice.

Important Notes Before You Buy

  • Inspect at the curb. Open the box with the driver. Dents in the hood, tears or a crushed roller get noted on the receipt or refused. Concealed damage must be reported within 5 days, missing parts within 30.
  • Power. Standard 110V outlet within 12 ft of the motor end.
  • Mounting height. At least 96 in of clear wall, and allow about 10.4 in for the hood under any gutter or soffit. Roof and soffit brackets are extra.
  • Hardware not included. Buy fasteners for your wall type before delivery day.
  • Residential only. A rental home is residential. A storefront or food truck is not, and the warranty won't follow it there.
  • Front bar is open. The hood covers the top and sides, not the front. For a sealed cassette, see the Key West.
  • Furniture not included. Nothing in the lifestyle photos ships with the awning.
