Common Questions

How cold does an ice bath actually get?

As cold as you make it. Filled with cold water it sits at whatever the ambient supply temperature is; with ice added it drops to the 40–50°F range that people are after. In winter in a cold climate it will get there on its own.

How long does a wood-fired hot tub take to heat?

Two to three hours from cold for a 422-gallon tub, depending on the outside temperature and how hard you run the stove. Internal stoves heat faster because the firebox sits in the water; external stoves give you back the bathing space.

What about water treatment?

For a cold plunge, most owners simply drain and refill rather than dose chemicals — the water is cold enough that it does not turn over quickly. For a wood-fired hot tub used by guests, treat it as you would any shared tub and follow your local health guidance for short-term rentals.

Can it live outside in winter?

Yes, that is the point of it. Drain it fully if you are leaving it unused through a hard freeze, since ice expanding inside a full tub is the one thing that will damage it.
