Two costs people forget. The first is freight — these crates are long and heavy and they move by semi, not UPS. The second is the pad. This is a permanent structure that gets anchored down, so you need concrete or an approved base under it. Get a local concrete quote before you fall in love with a size.

What Size Do You Need?

Diameter is the whole decision, and people almost always wish they'd gone one size up.

• 12 ft — a seating nook. A table and four chairs, or a hot tub.
• 15–16 ft — the sweet spot for backyards and short-term rentals. Comfortably seats eight.
• 18 ft — a real gathering space. Dining plus a lounge zone, or a fire feature in the middle.
• 21 and 24 ft — what event venues, wedding barns, and tasting rooms order.

Hardly anyone stops at a roof. The Sioux Steel Deluxe package adds a bottom wall sheet with an opening and a built-in countertop, which turns the wall itself into a serving bar — guests order from outside, you work from inside, and nobody tracks through the house. That same opening gives you a natural run for a grill, a griddle, or a keg fridge if you're building a grain bin outdoor kitchen.

The steep roof and open sides also make these one of the few structures that work over a gas fire feature, which is what turns a summer-only patio into a room you actually use in October.

If you're going that direction, decide before you pour: run power and water into the pad while it's still wet. Retrofitting it later means cutting concrete.

Buying a Kit vs. Building Your Own

If you already have an old bin sitting on your place, a welder, a tractor and some free weekends, building your own is cheaper on materials. Plenty of people do it and do it well.

But price it honestly. Sourcing the bin, cutting the roof free, cleaning and re-coating the steel, fabricating posts, and getting it set square on a pad is a season-long project. Most people who run those numbers end up buying the kit — and the kit is the only version that comes with a warranty.

Shipping, Honestly

These ship by freight truck, curbside. The crates are about 148 inches long, which is too long for a delivery liftgate — liftgates cap out at 96 inches, so no carrier will do it. You'll want a tractor, a forklift, or several strong helpers on site the day it lands.
