Outdoor Bar Kits vs. Handcrafted Bars: What You're Choosing Between

Three different things get called an outdoor bar, and they are not interchangeable.

Flat-pack bar kits are the $1,600 to $2,400 cedar panel kits sold by the big-box brands. They arrive as boards and hardware and you build them. For a property you visit twice a year, the weak point is that every joint is a joint you made, and nobody is coming to fix it.

Handcrafted made-to-order bars — what's on this page — are built for you, delivered by freight, and assembled on site. You're buying somebody else's labour and a heavier build. For a rental that matters more than the price gap: there's no assembly weekend, and no half-built bar under a tarp when guests check in.

Built-in bars mean concrete, plumbing and a contractor. Right for a property you're already renovating, wrong for one that's already earning.

How to Size an Outdoor Bar for Your Property

Guests stand at a bar, so what you're really buying is standing room, not surface area.

The 6' x 4' is the one for tight patios, side yards and pool decks. It tucks against a fence line without eating the lounge space that makes a patio look generous in listing photos.

The 8' x 5' is the safe pick for most rentals. It hosts a real group but still fits an average deck or screened porch.

The 10' x 5' is for properties chasing group bookings — reunions, bachelor weekends, milestone celebrations. Those groups pay more per night and specifically hunt for somewhere that holds the whole party.

Two things people get wrong. They buy for the biggest party they will ever host, then live with a bar that looks empty in every photo. And they forget the walk-behind: leave about three feet clear behind a bar or nobody can serve from it.

Weatherproof Construction: What These Are Made Of

A weatherproof outdoor bar is one you can leave out in February and not think about. Most bars sold as outdoor are not that.

• Frame: pressure-treated lumber — the same material class used for permanent outdoor structures, resistant to rot, moisture and insects.
• Roof: galvanized corrugated steel — so guests keep pouring through a passing shower instead of heading indoors.
• Finish: unfinished, ready to stain. We'd rather tell you plainly than have it arrive as a surprise. You stain it to match your deck, fence or property palette, which is why it ends up looking built-in rather than bolted on.

If you want a piece that arrives fully finished in a set colour, these are not it — and that's worth knowing before you order rather than after.

Covered vs. Open Outdoor Bars

Our bars come with a steel roof over the bar itself, which is what makes them usable in weather. If you want the whole seating area covered too, that's a separate structure: our gazebo kits and pavilion kits both work over and around a bar.

If the bar is the main outdoor feature of your listing, cover the seating as well. If it's one feature among several, leave it open and let the bar's own roof do the work.

Bar Stools and Bar-Height Seating

The bars don't include stools, so plan for them.

It doesn't rot, never needs staining, and hoses clean between guests. Swivel matters more than it sounds: guests turn to talk to each other instead of dragging stools across your decking.

Delivery, Lead Time and What Shows Up

These are made to order, so plan ahead — if your season starts in May, order in March. Delivery is by freight truck with a scheduled appointment, not a parcel left on the driveway, so someone needs to be there.

A freight truck needs room to turn, so if your property is on a narrow lane or a long unpaved drive, tell us up front — it occasionally changes the carrier. Inspect the delivery on arrival and note any freight damage before you sign; that one habit is the difference between a claim that gets paid and one that doesn't.

Can you leave an outdoor bar out all winter?
Yes. Ours are pressure-treated lumber with a galvanized steel roof, built to live outside permanently. What damages a wood bar is standing water on the top and feet sitting in wet soil, not cold. Keep the top clear and re-stain every couple of years.

Do outdoor bars come assembled?
Ours are assembled on site by the delivery crew, usually in under 90 minutes, and it's included in the shipping price. Flat-pack kits from the big-box brands arrive as boards and hardware for you to build.

What size outdoor bar do I need?
The 6' x 4' hosts four or more, the 8' x 5' hosts eight or more, and the 10' x 5' hosts ten or more. For most rental patios the 8' x 5' is the right balance of capacity and footprint.

Do the bars come with stools?
No. Bar stools and beverage equipment such as coolers, fridges and kegerators are sold separately, so you can set the bar up to match the property.

Can I put a kegerator or fridge in it?
Yes. All three sizes take coolers or a beer fridge, and the two larger bars will take a kegerator. The 10' x 5' has room for more than one.

Is an outdoor bar worth it for a short-term rental?
It's one of the few outdoor features guests name directly in reviews, and it photographs well enough to change which listing someone clicks. It earns its keep on properties where groups book together, less so on a two-person cabin.
