The Twin Cities open up the moment it breaks fifty degrees, and the good outdoor spaces here have had decades to work out what they're doing — river views on the Minneapolis side, walled stone terraces on the St. Paul side, and one garden with a trout stream running through it.

Jax Cafe
1928 University Ave NE, Northeast Minneapolis
The garden behind this 1930s steakhouse has a working trout stream in it, and between mid-April and October you can net your own trout out of it and have it cooked. That is not a gimmick they added last year. That is the reason people have been coming here for generations.
It's the single most distinctive patio in either city, and the reviews bear it out — of 2,642 Google reviews, 183 mention the patio and 43 mention the trout stream specifically.
W.A. Frost and Company
374 Selby Avenue, Cathedral Hill, St. Paul
A stone terrace under mature trees on Selby, and the one patio in the metro that gets called the best in the state without much argument — including in a testimonial they run on their own website, which takes some confidence.
It's the most formal space on this list and the most sheltered, because the tree canopy does most of the work. If you want the version of a Twin Cities patio that feels like somewhere in Europe, this is it.
Aster Cafe
125 SE Main Street, St Anthony Main, Minneapolis
Cobblestone street, the Mississippi in front of you, and the Stone Arch Bridge off to the side. There is no better-positioned patio in Minneapolis and it isn't close.
Patio seating is walk-in only — they don't take reservations for it — so the strategy is to turn up early and wait with a drink rather than to plan. Well-behaved dogs are allowed outside at their discretion.
The Bungalow Club
4300 East Lake Street, Longfellow, Minneapolis
A chef-owned restaurant on East Lake with a neighborhood patio, and Google's top result for patios in the city. It is the smallest operation on this list by some distance, which is the appeal — one location, one kitchen, nobody's regional concept.

2121 University Ave NE, Northeast Minneapolis
Southeast Asian food and a bright patio a few blocks from Jax, which makes Northeast the one neighborhood where you could reasonably do two patios in an evening.
What happens when it turns
Honestly? Most of it stops.
The Twin Cities patio season runs roughly from the first warm week in April to the end of October, and the venues here don't pretend otherwise. Some extend a few weeks with heaters and cover, but none of the five above publish anything about their winter setup, so we're not going to tell you they're heated when we haven't confirmed it.
If you want an outdoor table in January here, the search term that actually finds one is "heated patios near me" — and interest in that phrase nationally runs at its highest in November, December and January, exactly when the general patio search dies off. Call ahead. That's the whole trick.
A practical note on timing
The first genuinely warm weekend of spring is the busiest patio day of the year in both cities, and it is not a good day to try somewhere new. Wait a fortnight.
September is the underrated month — warm afternoons, cool evenings, and the crowds have thinned because everyone assumes it's over. It isn't, quite.
