Columbus has two patio traditions running at once, and they don't resemble each other.
German Village does walled brick courtyards under old trees — the kind of outdoor space that took a hundred years to look like that. The Short North and Italian Village do beer gardens and street-facing decks. Both are good. They're good in completely different ways.

The brick courtyard here is the archetype of the German Village patio, and it's the one most people in the city name first.
Patio seating is first come, first served, weather permitting — they don't hold outdoor tables. That's worth planning for rather than being annoyed by; turn up early and have a drink while you wait.
The Top Steak House
2891 East Main Street, Bexley
A mid-century steakhouse that has stayed largely as it was, which is the entire proposition. The kind of place that has mostly stopped being built, with outdoor seating attached.
If you want the Columbus that existed before the Short North, this is where it still is.
Elevator Brewery & Draught Haus
161 N. High Street, Downtown
A brewery on High Street with outdoor seating, named in Experience Columbus's guide to downtown patios. Central enough to be a starting point rather than a destination.
Seventh Son Brewing
Italian Village
A large beer garden at an independent Columbus brewery, and the first name on Step Out Columbus's outdoor dining guide. Italian Village is the neighborhood where the city's newer outdoor drinking has concentrated.
What happens once it turns
Ohio winters end patio season properly. Most outdoor seating in Columbus closes from November to March, and the German Village courtyards — beautiful as they are — are not built for cold.
None of the four above publish anything about heated or covered outdoor seating, so we won't tell you they have it. A call is the only reliable way to find out what's running in December.
Nationally, the search for heated patios peaks in exactly the months the general patio search dies. There is more demand for a warm outdoor table in winter than there are places offering one.
A practical note on timing
May through September is the reliable stretch, with late September into October often the best of it — the trees over the German Village courtyards do their most attractive work just before they drop.
