Anywhere can put tables outside in March. The patios people still use in August are the ones that did something about shade, air and water — canopies, misting fans, tree cover, a breeze off the lake. That's the filter worth applying here.

East Austin
The outdoor space here is built into private cabana-style areas with canopies and misting fans, seating up to six apiece. That is a proper engineering answer to an Austin summer rather than an umbrella and good intentions.
It's the most deliberate solution to heat on this list, and it's why the patio stays usable in months when other places quietly move everyone indoors.
Cosmic Coffee + Beer Garden
121 Pickle Rd, South Austin
A large planted beer garden with food trucks, and one of the few outdoor spaces in the city where the greenery is doing real shade work rather than decoration.
It functions as a coffee shop in the morning and a beer garden in the evening, which makes it one of the rare Austin patios worth going to twice in a day.
Sour Duck Market
1814 E Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, East Austin
On Eater Austin's patio map, and a straightforward good time — bakery and bar, indoor and outdoor, on a stretch of MLK that's walkable to several other options.
Mozart's Coffee Roasters
3825 Lake Austin Blvd
A tiered deck running straight down to Lake Austin. Water and a breeze are the other way to solve the heat problem, and this is the clearest example of it in the city.
It's a coffee house rather than a bar, which means it works at eight in the morning as well as eight at night.
When to actually go
Austin runs the same inverted calendar as Dallas. Winter is fine — genuinely pleasant patio weather through December and January — and high summer is the season to plan around rather than through.
March through May and October through November are the good stretches. From late June to early September, the only question worth asking a venue is whether the patio is shaded and whether they run misters or fans. Justine's is the one on this list that answers it outright.
A practical note on timing
Evenings, from May onward. An unshaded patio in Austin between noon and five in summer is a test of character rather than a nice afternoon.
March is worth a warning: the city is at capacity for two weeks during SXSW and every patio in the central neighborhoods is full.
