Outdoor Christmas Light Ideas for Rental Properties

Owner's Insights

The best outdoor Christmas light idea for your rental property is the one that reads from the road at dusk and still works when nobody is there to fuss with it. That rules out most of what you will find on Pinterest, which is beautiful and assumes somebody lives there to fix it when it fails.

I have watched hosts spend a weekend on an elaborate display, then spend all of December getting messages about the half that went dark. The ideas below are the ones that survive a season unattended, photograph well for your listing, and do not need you on a ladder in the middle of a booked week.

One honest note before you read on. Lights will not fix a listing that is not already good. They will make your listing look like somebody cares about the place in December, which is worth more than it sounds.

1. Outline the Roofline and Stop There

If you do one thing, do this. A single clean run along your roof edge gives the house a shape after dark, and shape is what shows up in a photo taken from your driveway.

Use linkable strings so your whole run comes off one outlet. No extension cords across your path where a guest can catch a foot in the dark. Our linkable LED icicle lights run $69 and connect end to end, and the Christmas Curb Appeal Kit starts at $141.60 if you would rather buy the run as one thing.

Warm white reads as expensive. Multicolour reads as fun. Neither is wrong, but pick one and commit, because half and half reads as leftover.

2. Make the Entrance the Hero

Your front door is the one part of the property every single guest stands in front of, usually at night, usually holding a bag and looking for the lockbox.

A lit wreath does more work here than anything else you can hang on your door. Ours start at $949 for a 72 inch, which is a real number, so if that is more than the idea is worth to you, a smaller lit motif either side of your door does most of the same job.

The practical bonus: a well-lit entrance is a safety feature disguised as a decoration. Fewer messages at 11pm about not being able to find the door.

3. Pick One Motif and Repeat It

This is the difference between your display looking designed and it looking like a clearance shelf.

Choose a single shape, snowflakes or starbursts or candy canes, and run it evenly along your roofline or fence. Repetition reads as intentional from fifty feet away. Variety reads as clutter. Our linkable motif range runs $59 to $89 a piece, and they are built to link into the same run.

4. Put It All on a Timer

The idea nobody lists as an idea, and the one that matters most on a property you are not living in.

A guest checking in at nine at night should arrive at a lit house, not a dark one they have to find a switch for. A timer handles that without you thinking about it, and it stops your display running at three in the morning for nobody.

If you are already buying your lights, buy the timer at the same time. It is the cheapest part of the whole project and the one that changes what a guest actually experiences.

5. Light the Path, Not Just the House

Your guests arrive in the dark, on gravel, pulling a suitcase, in a place they have never been.

Pathway lighting is the idea that pays you back in your reviews rather than your photos. It does not need to be Christmas-specific to work in December, and anything that reduces the chance of somebody rolling an ankle on the way in is worth more than another motif on the roof.

6. One Statement Piece, Not Three

If your outdoor space is part of why people book, a single large piece in your yard is the thing that gets photographed and posted, which is marketing you did not have to make.

One large lit piece with room around it beats three medium ones fighting each other. Browse the large outdoor Christmas decorations and pick the one that suits your property rather than the one you like most in isolation.

Order these early. Large pieces ship on a freight truck rather than a parcel van, and lead times run two to three weeks on average. That is an average and not a promise. Call or text for today's real number before you count on a date.

7. Leave the Hardware Up, Take the Lights Down

The idea that makes next year easy.

Permanent mounting hooks stay on your house year round and cost $0.40 each. Clips are $0.13 to $0.48. Leave those in place, store your lights properly, and next November stops being a project and becomes an afternoon.

Take the lights themselves down, though. Sun does more damage to a light string than winter ever will.

Outdoor Christmas Light Ideas FAQ

What kind of Christmas lights are best for outside?

Outdoor-rated LED with replaceable bulbs in real sockets. LEDs draw a fraction of the power of old incandescent sets and they run cool, which matters on a roofline you are not checking daily. Replaceable bulbs matter because one failure should not take out a whole run in the middle of a booked December.

What are the best long-lasting outdoor Christmas lights?

Commercial grade strings, which are built to be taken down, boxed and put back up rather than used once. The tell is whether the listing talks about socket type and how many strings you can link. If it only shows a lifestyle photo and a bulb count, it is a retail set built for one or two seasons.

How do you make Christmas lights look good outside?

Three rules. Pick one colour temperature and stick to it. Pick one motif and repeat it. Light the shape of your building rather than filling every surface. Almost every display that looks cluttered broke one of those three, and almost every display that looks expensive followed all of them.

What are the latest trends in outdoor Christmas lights?

Colour-changing RGB sets run from a remote, so one purchase covers warm white in December and colour for other events. And permanent mounting hardware that stays up year round, which is less a trend than a practical shift that hosts adopt faster than homeowners do.

Are outdoor Christmas lights waterproof?

Outdoor-rated strings are built for weather, with sealed sockets and outdoor-rated wire, but that is not the same as submersible. Keep your connections off the ground and out of downspout runoff, and a run will go through rain, snow and freeze without trouble.

How many light strings can I link together?

It depends on the product, and it is printed on the product and the packaging. Check it before you buy rather than after, because exceeding it is a fire risk and not a performance question. Tell us your roofline length and we will work the run out for you.

Final Verdict

If you have one weekend and a modest budget: roofline run, lit entrance, timer. Around $150 to $300 all in. That is your whole job and it covers 90 percent of what a guest notices.

If the outdoor space is why people book: add one statement piece, order it by early November so freight does not catch you out, and build your photo around it.

If you are managing the property from a distance: timer first, then permanent hardware, then lights. Anything that needs you on site in December is an idea that will cost you a message.

If you are not sure what your frontage needs: send us the length and a photo. We will tell you what it takes, including telling you when the smaller kit is the right one. Call or text 1 800 914 0074 or 352 274 6387.
